| Background | Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that attacks the D-alanyl D-alanine component of the bacterial cell wall. Up until recently, it was used in the prophylaxis and treatment of Gram-positive bacterial infections. Some species have now started to develop resistance due to the strucural modifcation of various surface glycoproteins. |
