| Background | Cox-2 is involved in the response of cells to growth factors, tumor promoters, and cytokines that induce its expression. Given its role in synthesizing prostaglandins, Cox-2 is therefore of interest in studying immune response regulation. These enzymes are targets of NSAID (Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as aspirin. Prostaglandins (PGs) formed by COX-2primarily mediate pain, fever, and inflammation. COX-2 is induced by a wide variety of stimuli and was initially identified as an immediate-early growth response gene. In addition, COX-2 expression is markedly increased in 85-90% of human colorectal adenocarcinomas, whereas COX-1levels remain unchanged. COX-2 may be involved in angiogenesis, as new angiogenic endothelial cells express the inducible COX-2 while normal blood vessels express COX-1. |
