| C Reactive Protein antibody | |
| Background | C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute phase serum protein, synthesized in the liver in response to inflammatory cytokines. CRP consists of five identical subunits (24 kDa) and the molecular weight of the entire molecule is 120 kDa. Normal serum levels of CRP are 0.1-0.5mg/L; this can rise to 200-500 mg/L during acute phase reactions. The exact role of CRP is not known but it does display activities such as complement activation, opsonisation and activation of non-specific leukocyte antimicrobial activity. CRP and especially its degradation products display anti-inflammatory activities. |
