| Background | IL16, also known as lymphocyte chemoattractant factor (LCF), is a proinflammatory cytokine that is chemotactic for CD4+ T lymphocytes, monocytes, and eosinophils. It was originally identified as a CD8+ T cell derived chemoattractant for CD4+ cells. The biologically active form of IL16, originally proposed to be a homotetramer of 14 kDa chains with 130 amino acid residues, is now believed to have been derived from the C terminus of the precursor molecule. Subsequently, IL16 is synthesized as a precursor molecule (pro IL16) of approximately 68 kDa and 631 amino acid residues lacking a signal peptide. The sequence and structure of IL16 is conserved across species. Structurally and functionally, particularly in the C terminal region, human and mouse IL16 share approximately 82 % similarity. |
