| Background | Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) is a CC chemokine that mediates/promotes monocyte recruitment into an inflammatory site and activates monocytes and macrophages. (1,2). Mainly produced by activated endothelial cells and VSMCs, MCP-1 binds to seven-transmembrane-spanning proteins (CCR2, Duffy Ag/receptor for chemokines/Duffy, D6) (3). CCR2 is the only known functional receptor for MCP-1, where MCP-1 to CCR interaction has been linked to downstream signal pathways involving heterotrimeric G protein (4). MCP-1 is involved in the pathogenesis of diseases characterized by mononuclear cell infiltration, such as rheumatoid arthritis and bronchial asthma (5). MCP-1 induced macropage infiltration in fatty tissue has been suggested as a link between obesity and insulin resistance (6). |
