Background	Cytokeratin 18 is an acidic keratin which is found primarily in non squamous epithelia and is present in a majority of adenocarcinomas and ductal carcinomas but not in squamous cell carcinomas. Cytokeratin 18 exists in combination with Cytokeratin 8, a basic keratin. Hepatocellular carcinomas have been reportedly defined by the use of antibodies that recognize only Cytokeratins 8 and 18.

Specificity	Specificity: The antibody is useful for the discrimination of adenocarcinomas and mesotheliomas from squamous cell carcinomas and non-epithelial tumors. Clone RGE 53 specifically recognizes simple and glandular epithelial cells from the gastrointestinal tract, the respiratory tract and the urogenital tract, as well as endocrine and exocrine tissues and myoepithelial cells. In the transitional epithelium of the bladder RGE 53 reacts only with superficial (umbrella) cells. No reaction with stratified squamous epithelia.
