Background	Matrix metalloproteinase (MMPs) are a family of closely related zinc-containing proteolytic enzymes, capable of degrading connective tissue components. MMP-11 is localized on the long arm of chromosome 22. MMP-11 gene was originally identified on the basis that it is expressed specifically in stromal cells surrounding invasive breast carcinomas. MMP-11 is expression is found more specifically in malignant tumors than in benign ones.
