Background Borrelia burgdorferi is a species of bacteria of the spirochete class of the genus Borrelia. B.burgdorferi sensu stricto (predominant in North America, but also in Europe), is the agent of Lyme disease, and is a sub species of B.bugdorferi sensu lato.

This anti Borrelia burgdorferi antibody recognizes one of the causative agents of Lyme disease. B. burgdorferi is a spirochaete bacterium and one of the few pathogenic bacteria capable of surviving in the absence of iron.
This antibody cross reacts with Treponema pallidum, Borrelia hermsii and Borrelia parkeri.
