Background Parvovirus B19 is the causitive agent of fifth disease also known as Erythema Infectiosum or slapped cheek syndrome in humans. Discovered serendipitously in 1974 during routine Hepatitis B screening at the central public health laboratory in London, it is a single stranded DNA virus belonging to the family Parvoviridae and until the discovery of Human Bocavirus and PARV4 was the only parvovirus recognised to be pathogenic in humans.
