Background Thyroid stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) is important for normal growth and function of thyroid gland. It is also involved in autoimmune disorder. TSHR is preserved in the basal cell surface of the follicular cells of the thyroid and is increased in Graves' disease.

In normal thyroid tissues positive staining may be observed exclusively along the basal cell surface of the follicular cells with no staining of optical and lateral surfaces. No staining is observed in the foci of squamous cell metaplasia of papillary carcinomas, anaplastic carcinoma and medullary carcinoma.
