Background of CD156a / ADAM8 antibody

The ADAM (A Disintegrin And Metalloprotease) family of cell surface proteases mediate a number of cellular processes, including differentiation, cell fusion, cell-cell interactions, and shedding of plasma membrane-bound growth factor precursors. Each ADAM contains a prodomain, a catalytic metalloprotease domain, a disintegrin domain, a cysteine-rich domain, a transmembrane domain, and a cytoplasmic domain. ADAM8 was first identified in macrophage cell lines and was designated CD156. Expression of ADAM8 is also observed in osteoclasts, where it promotes osteoclast differentiation. In the CNS during neurodegeneration, ADAM8 is expressed in neurons, astrocytes and microglia. ADAM8 undergoes autocatalytic removal of the prodomain and metalloprotease domain.
