Background of Porcine IgM antibody

IgM antibodies form a major proportion of the primary antibody response, whereas the secondary response consists almost entirely of IgG. IgMs are often referred to as macroglobulins because of their high molecular weight. They form a pentameric structure consisting of five subunits and a single J-chain. Each subunit contains the well-known pairs of heavy and light chains, with the particular feature of the heavy (µ) chain containing one variable and four constant regions. The molecular weight of intact IgM is approximately 900kDa. In polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under denaturing conditions, the heavy chain migrates as a band of approximately 85kDa.
